Gigablast
WiseNut
meta search engines
Gigablast is a relatively new search engine created by Matt Wells. Matt Wells used to be a search engineer for Infoseek. Gigablast services about half a million queries, searches, a day mostly through partner sites like Ixquick.com. Currently it's a 3 man project.
After being bought by LookSmart in early 2002, little has been done to improve and promote this search engine. It was once considered a Google killer, but right now it's harmless. Recently in early 2003 LookSmart bought Grub to help index more sites for WiseNut. Grub is a downloadable program that allows users to host, from their computers, spiders that map the web.
You may be asking what a meta-search engine is? Well it's a search engine that uses the databases of many other search engines. meta search engines don't have spiders that crawl the web or editors to review websites. Ixquick is my favorite meta-search engine because it's format is familiar to normal search engines. There are tons of meta search engines out there. Kartoo is a meta-search engine that clusters websites visually. Ixquick ranks sites based on the site's rank on other search engines.
